Chess Fest is a celebration where players of all ages and skill levels come together to watch, learn, play, and enjoy chess. Last year, it featured two tournaments, teaching sessions, simultaneous exhibitions, and more. The event is completely free and open to everyone. Last year, it was attended by over 350 people. We aim to host more than 500 this year! Scroll down to see the list of events.

Tournaments

We are hosting three tournaments on September 20th: The New Canaan Classic, The Great Bughouse Face-Off, and The Rush Hour Blitz. The first starts at 10:15am and each player plays three classical (long) games. This tournament is meant for players with a USCF membership or experienced online players aiming to play more over-the-board (OTB) chess. The Great Bughouse Face-Off is a variant tournament. Bughouse is a variant of chess where players compete in teams. The Rush Hour is an unrated speed chess tournament open to all players of all skill levels. The tournament starts at 3:45pm and will end at 4:45pm.

Chess Instruction

We are hosting three instruction sessions on September 20th. You will receive individualized instruction based on your prior chess experience. We can introduce the game to you or help you work through an opening, just let us know. Each session is one hour long.

Other Events

There is a lot more to chess than learning the game and competing in tournaments. We love the game because of the communities that get built around it. Therefore, we have casual play planned from 10am to 2pm. Meet new chess players or come with your friends and play a few games. All chess variants are welcome! From 2pm onward, players will have the chance to play against an expert in a simultaneous exhibition or watch how they maneuver through multiple games at once. As if playing multiple players at once wasn't enough of a challenge, we will also have an expert play a game of chess with a blindfold for players to spectate at 3pm. After an entertaining game of blindfold chess, there will be a piece stacking competition. People must register in teams and the goal is to build the tallest tower possible with 32 Pieces (no pun intended). We will also be hosting other events day-of such as a chess-themed scavenger hunt, a giant chessboard, and more!
